Message: I also have a '97 explorer, that runs fine, except that now it runs cold, that is, the temperature gage is always at the cold level, and it barely moves from that position. It also blows cold air out of the heater or defroster. Before this, it would blow hot air out of the heater & defroster. Any suggestions?

better heat than i've ever had in that car. i'm
just hoping the heater core dosen't start
leaking then i will have to replace it.

Message: Had same problem on 2002 Ford Explorer: Heater blowing cold air. Seemed like symptom of one of three likely problems: 1) Radiator fluid low 2) Thermostat needed replacing 3) Flushing of cooling system, incl. heater core. 1) Radiator reservoir was low, but added coolant (look to make sure you're adding the right color; green or yellow), that failed to fix it 2) Thermostat appeared to be working (felt hoses that are beyond the thermostat and they were letting hot fluid through) 3) The two lines leading into the heater core; one was hot, the other cold (an inlet to the heater core and an outlet from the heater core). Seemed to indicate a blockage somewhere in the heater core. Took it to a reputable shop and asked for a radiator flush. I did not realize a "radiator flush" was a low pressure process that essentially replaces your radiator fluid at a slow pace. I previously saw another posting that required the force of a garden hose to free the blocked heater core of debris. I asked if this could be done. They hooked up to the inlet and ran the water through and tested; no heat. Tried hooking the outlet line and tested; WORKED! Whatever was blocking the flow of radiator fluid was now removed and the heater works fine. They said the maintenance recommendation for this vehicle is to have the radiator flushed every 30,000 miles. I guess after this point the radiator fluid starts to accumulate sediment and other debris that can clog smaller areas of the circulation system, such as within the heater core. Good to know.

Message: My 2002 Dakota 4.7 91000mi would be hard starting and when it would start I would get a small puff of bluish-white smoke from exhaust and then heat up when in idle an check guauges lite would come on and when driving the temp would be incredibly hot would have to turn temp to almost cold air an roll window down just to cool off. Checked anti-freeze level an really low, filled up an runs an heats normally. But from time to time I get a strong smell of anti-freeze but when I look there is no puddle anywhere, any ideas what that could be from? Could it be something internal, motor or heating system?

Message: dls yea it could be a vacuum issue or an issue with the controls themselves.id start by checking all vacuum lines running into the truck to make sure there hooked up and not broke or split or anything.
jeff 02 47 small puff of blueish smoke at start up is usually oil leak down from bad valve seals.my friends 2000 3.9 have 90k on it and does it too.other thing u said about anti freeze smell and such u might wanna take a look at this post and feel around on the drivers floor board these daks seem to have a problem with the heater cores goin bad.

Message: I replaced the water pump, thermostat, replaced heater hoses, checked all other hoses. Cleaned heater core by flushing it out.
The heater blows warm air when idling but blows hot air when rpm around 1,000 to 1,500. Why sdoes it blow only warm air at idle.

Message: I had to have my water pump replaced three years ago and ever since my heater has been giving me nothing but lukewarm air. Over the years I've flush the system several times and replaced the thermostat but to no avail. I did not want to even think about replacing the heater core.
Then, in a desperate search(the temperatures are going to get Arctic by this weekend) for a quick fix , yesterday afternoon I Googled my problem and found this website. I read the post on how to back-flush the heater core with great interest. I got the stuff I needed on my way home from work and performed the proceedure last night. This morning I drove to work in a warm truck. WOW!! Piece o' cake!

Message: I bought a 2000 V6 Dakota with only 27k this last summer and now I find out (in the winter) that the heater hardly works. I took it into a Dodge dealership to have it fixed, hopefully under my $2500k extended warranty.. but nope, not covered. Supposedly a bad heater core that will cost me $1600 to fix.
I backflushed the heater core (and radiator while I was at it) and now the heater kicks out the heat! Wow, $1.95 flush treatment fluid and my garden hose to fix a supposed $1600 heater core problem.
You bet I'll be talking to the service manager this next week.

Message: Excellent information here. I have a 1997 Chevy Express 1 ton cargo van. I had it loaded and on my way to a 4 hour long drive when no heat would come out (it was 16 degrees) and all of a sudden the coolant temperature goes to meltdown, I limped home and changed the thermostat. Overheating solved but still no heat. Went to the library to find the hoses from a diagram because I couldn't see the darn things, after that everything was as said here. A 5/8 hose fitting and a back flush kit solved the problem. Many thanks. The shops quoted $40 to $45 but I didn't want to take chances.

Well, I guess it's time to open the hood and look for the leak before it's too late and your engine breathes it's final breathe.
