Subject: AC Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I would like to know long does the AC charge last? I have a 2.5L 98 with about 50,000 miles and it is not blowing cold air anymore. I bought an ac tester and refill kit. What got me confused was that the tester tells me that my AC is fully charged but my ac is still not blowing cold air. Do I have to purge the system and then refill it? Or should I have it done by a professional?

have a pro look at it sounds like you got a bad pressure switch somewhere in the system, you have at least two.
To service it you need to vacuum down the system before recharging it as if you get any air in it you could mess it up.

Thanks for your help. I ended up buying a repair manual and figured it out. I found that testing for pressure on the low side was not the correct way to do it. I needed to use a thermometer to measure how cold the AC was blowing at max. The output temperature should to be 35 to 40 degrees F below ambient(ouside air) temperature. It wasn't and I decided to recharge the system. The refrigerant I used was able to check for leaks, lubricate, seal and recharge the system. system. The repair book was the best investment yet for my truck.

Most likely condensation is collecting in the drip pan below the A/C condensor. This causes a musty odor when the stagnation warms up. There is an arosol available that masks the smell but the best advice is to shut the A/C off several minutes before shutting off the engine. This should burn off the extra water vapor which drips from the condensor.
Ever notice how it doesn't smell all winter long? This is your problem.

Check the relay box under the hood on the drivers side. Replace the one that is for the compressor.
Mine went bad. It worked sometimes.

The relay box under the hood will solve many problems..One of them being the air compressor not runing. I've had 5 of them go bad. They can cause your tran not to shift, your running lights not work, your windshield wipers not work on intermitent, your horn not blow, your engine stop running, your engine start hard, etc. First place to look for any problem. The dealer will never tell you about them. Personal experience with dealer is bad. Sorry..I'm a life long Chrysler fan but the dealer is only interested in the 78 dollar diagnostic fee and then ripping you off. People that don't know anything about cars must be paying through the nose.

I have a 2001 dak club cab V-6. Had it 17 months now with no trouble at all. But I notice the a/c is not as cold as my 93 Eagle car. Feels cool when you put your hand to the vent but doesn't cool down nearly as fast as the car. Are they all like that?

My ac has been "out" for about 6 months now, still don't know what it is. It will work great for about 30 minutes or until I get to 4th gear, or when I get to high rpm's. After that the ac isn't worth anything, it just blows out the defrost vents and then warms up over time. Any ideas, the dealer was clueless, they weren't much help with anything else either. I have a 98 cc 4x4 v6 manual transmision.

I'm just going to post this because I've found it while searching for AC parts, and I've not seen it on any messages before. Variable Orifice Valve
http://www.imcool.com/articles/aircondition/VOV1.htm
You can find where to buy by clicking on Smart VOV Info, then the Contacts button. This is more an upgrade than problem solver. Just thought I'd throw it out for all to see. Maybe someone already has one??? If so, do tell.

DCX tried this on the KJ and pulled it right before Job 1 due to high failure rates. It's a good concept as there needs to be some means of controlling the refrigerant mass flow rate at idle. The "compromised" orifice size combined with an insufficient condenser is why so many CCOT systems perform poorly at idle. Your best bet? Add an electric fan (can't preach this one enough-why do you thinj DCX did it on the AN/DN platforms??).

LR

Gibson Dual Sport, AirForce One air intake, Jet II, IAT, TPS, when are we gonna see some real parts??!!

It took me about 2 1/2 on my '99. I'm sure your's is not too much different. You have to use an adaptor to hook the can to the line, and they make one that has a guage built in to it. It's only about $5 more than the one without the guage. When the needle gets in the green you just disconnect it. Very simple. By the way, while you're at it, add a can of lubricant/sealer too. They may not have it out with the 134 cans, but most auto parts stores should carry it. This is not the 134 can that has it included, but a more potent individual mix.

Make sure its the 12oz. cans if you are going to put 2 1/2 of them in your system. I had a problem with my A/C and finally fixed it myself. Maybe this can help a few of you. One get a thermometer and turn A/C to max let run for at least 8 minutes check temp with guage should be at a minimum 30 degrees colder than outside ambient temp. Also check to see if compressor clutch is engaging(you should be able to hear it when you turn the a/C on), or at least notice an idle increase. Could be a pressure switch also, the one on the condensor if you unplug it your compressor should stay on(engaged) and the one on the low side port going into your compressor if you disconnect that one your compressor will stay off (with the a/c switch on). If all that works fine check low side port with a calibrated gauge. And I say that because the cheap ass guage I bought told me the charge I put on my system was correct when it was actually over charged. This did not allow the coolant to properly move throught the system and thus no cold air. An auto shop should be able to collect and recharge your system for you but average price is around 85-114$ R-134A is not harmful to the enviroment so if you want to save some doe wear a face shield and gloves and stick your finger on the low side port like you would a bike tire and discharge that R-134 with the A/C on and then recharge it yourself(Don't discharge it this way until empty) Just enough to get your test guage to say its low. Then add some R-134a till your in the good again. I hope that helps someone, my a/c was out for over a year and I did a lot of reading on the a/c system on dodge dakotas. I guess finally being fed up and not worried about damaging anything led to bleeding the system and recharging it. But make sure you have a good pressure guage to check it with those 3$ pieces of plastic crap suck.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! I have a 2002 dodge dakota and whenever I turn on the air I have a huge puddle on my passenger side the dealership fixed it about 6-9 months ago so they say..at first they coudn't figure out if the door seal was leaking or what but they ended up replacing the door seal and the carpeting and really not saying too much now it has happened again, and they say it is because we have allowed leaves to accumulate and it is blocking some screen and it is not their fault but they said they will replace the carpeting!I am so &%&#@!# annoyed!, I have trouble with the drivers seat and other little crap I think it was just not made well! Please any info would greatly be appreciated! thank you.
