Message: Guys like RHOLBROOK are the biggest cause of misinformation on this board. If anyone finds a lifter on a 4.7 I'll it it and a pound of dog shlt too.
A 4.7, like all OHC engines has "LASH ADJUSTERS". While there may be no difference to the average hill billy, in strict mechanical and engineering terms, they are worlds apart.
The tick you hear is are trapped in the lash adjuster that causes excessive cold lash. It's possible that you have a small particle of FOD in the lash adjuster or it's bleeding down from incorrect shutdown procedure.
If you're one of those drivers that floors the accelerator before shutting off the key you'll definitely have this and other problems. Always let the engine idle for at least 20 seconds before shutting it off, don't blip the throttle.

Message: toby. I'm not going to say your wrong. but I looked on dodge parts website. I found lifters for the 4.7, I found rocker arms for the 4.7. but there were no items found in the "current" category when I looked up the keywords "valve lash adjusters or lash adjusters, that is what lifters do, they adjust valve lash.

Message: Sorry to bring this old message to life but, let me paste the valve specs into this post so we can all answer the question about whether or not the 4.7 has lifters. (the technical term you boys were looking for was hydraulic end-pivot roller rockers) Notice the 5.9 does have Lifters while the 4.7 does not.

Message: I read 20 e-mails on this site and NOBODY lists how to adjust the lash?? What kind of site is this?? For a 92 V6 Dakota 4X4 :: Do you open them up till they tap;then tighter till no noise..followed by 1/2 to 3/4 turn to place the hydraulic roller in the middle of it's play ??
CERTIFIED mechanics please reply for turn down
value from zero lash..THANKS !

Lash adjuster, lifter, same basic thing...Only difference is lifters are used in OHV engines whereas lash adjusters are used in OHC applications. They both accomplish the same thing.
There is no way to adjust the valve lash on a 3.9L V6 if it has its original design rocker arms and pivots. They're what's considered a "positive stop" rocker arm, and simply get tighened up to a specified torque, not "zero lash plus xxx turn" like the Chevys of years gone by were. If you're getting valvetrain noise in one of these, the real fix for it is to replace all 12 lifters, rocker arms, and pivots. Generally, these engines measured by Chevy's method are zero lash plus 1/2-3/4 turn.
If upgrading to something like Crower or Crane (Mopar Performance) roller rockers, then you adjust them like a S.B. Chevy per the method I mentioned above. These kits eliminate the rocer bolts and pivots and replace them with screw-in studs like a SBC has.
Sounds to me like you just have one or more sticky lifters. Chances are, you could get away with just replacing the lifters only, if the rockers and pivots are in good shape yet.
Oh yeah...The person who said Mopar oil filters are made by Fram is only about 10% right...The only one made by Fram is the "Severe Duty" V10 filter. The others are mainly made by Purolator, including the common 5281090 that most newer engines take.

Message: Well forgive me for not looking at the date of the thread. I found it on Google when looking for actual answers to a problem, instead I found a bunch of people bickering about next to nothing. Have fun, kids...I'll leave your message board alone now and go back to where there's some actual knowledge and experience.

Message: I just bought a 1983 Mercedes 380 SL with 97,000 miles on it. It raps when I start it cold but the noise goes away in a few minutes. If I restart it an hour later, it's quiet. I was told to either change the oil vicosity or put in an additive. I understand that Lucas Engine Oil Additive might be a good one.

Message: Check the nuts/bolts on the exhaust manifolds. I
know for a fact that on the pre overhead cam
engines the fasteners tend to loosen up over time
and you get a tapping or clicking sound that comes
out between the manifold and head surface at each
loose port. As the engine heats up the manifold
expands and "tightens" it self up. The problem
gets more and more pronounced as time goes by.
Tighten the manifold to head fasteners and it will
probably cure or make the noise quieter. I have
found this on 3 Dakotas so far and mine twice. Its
a "free" fix it takes about 10 minutes. I have
also found one vehicle that one of the bolts has
snapped off so that's a possibility too.
