I just bought a '99 5.2L 4x4 CC about 6 months ago for about $16K... the original sticker price was about $26K.
What are they basing their "trade in" on? Do you have a smaller engine, no power options? no 4x4?
What's the deal on your truck?

Message: I just got $6500 in trade for my '96 club cab 2WD w/60 some odd thousand miles. That's what I wanted for it, so I was happy. I'd try a new dealership. Also, price the new one out too and just give them like 6% over invoice. Today's purchasing climate is pretty ripe for you to get a deal. I did.
Good luck.

Message: Low trade-in values on cars have always been a complaint for new-car buyers.
Dealers are being squeezed, forced to sell new cars for invoice or lower, etc.
The only place that they can still make some money
is in the used card market. In addition, used card
sales are down with many people buying new cars at the current deals being offered.
They are offering low money on your trade to hedge
against holding the vehicle for too long, and for
a chance to make some profit in their industry.
The best thing for you to do is to sell the truck
yourself, and then go to the dealer with cash
down on a new truck.

Message: This is for Big G. People like you are why people like me pay higher insurance premiums. As for Robert,

"You really aren't naive enough to think that the insurance company will give you what you want do you?"

I work for an insurance co. We use Nada to settle total losses, hopefully on legitimate losses. I have done fair market surveys for these vehicles and my customers are being taken care of as far as indemnification. If people want the impossible, is it within your power to give it to them?
The dealer has to make money on your trade and there is a significant drop in used car /truck sales. This might be caused by 0.9 to 2.9 interest on new car/truck rates. I traded my 3.9 liter, standard, 4X2, Sport 98 Dakota in on my 2000 4.7, 4X4, automatic, Slt and the value on the 98 was reduced because it took too may feet and hands to drive. I bought my 2000 in Oct of 2000 with 8000 miles on it for $ 19,000. In June 0f 2002, the Nada is still $ 19,625 with 28900 miles on it.
Eric, do the research on your 98 with the options it has. There are resources available, this website, autotrader.com. to see of they are offering a fair amount. Also find out how much you owe, this is very important as far as negative equity towards your new vehicle.

Message: insurance co.s pay blue book, alot more than a dealer will give you on trade. Dealers give you what they could get for your vehicle at an auction or thereabout. That way if they cant sell it or something is wrong with it, they unload it at an auction. My neighbor just got 3 grand for an 88 le baron conv. that someone totaled, right before that he was trying to sell for 2,000. he was happy

Back in '99 when I went to trade my loaded '90 Isuzu LS Spacecab w/topper in for my '00 Dakota, I was offered a whopping $100 (thats 1 hundred) for it as a trade and I knew it was worth more than that so I headed on down the road to the next Dodge dealer where they gave me $4900 for my trade-in and I picked my Dakota up for almost $2000 less than the first dealership and got more stuff in the truck too.
Even got a free dinner across the street at Tony Roma's for buying my truck from them. Thats a dealership worth doing business at.

Message: ...I keep trucks about 10 years and put almost 200K miles on em.
If you look around and REALLY compare numbers...it doesn't add up to trade in ANY car...Lexus...Hyundai...Dodge...I don't care who it is made by.
Cars and trucks are typically a poor place to put your money.
I buy one new with a big warranty, take REAL good care of it and drive it until it is a $2,000 vehicle no matter what. Then, I sell it outright and use the 2 grand as a down on a new one and start all over again. Hey, at least for the first 100k milea, I am covered by the warranty on most stuff..then I'll slide for the next few years. You'll be surprised at how much cheaper it is to drive a paid-for truck out of warranty and pay for the repairs as they come along. I have NEVER come close to the cost of a year's worth of payments on a newer vehicle.
People readily dump off trucks with 25-60K miles on em....WHY? they've got lOTS of life left. I guess some people like always having a car note. Not ne...thank you!
Car dealerships make more money on used cars that on new ones. They typically low-ball emotional buyers that come in and REALLY want that new car and salesmen are pretty successful at talking most people out of their cars at quite a loss, then turning around and selling that used car on their lot for several thousand more than they gave you on trade.
Its like a friggin pawn shop at a used car dealership and I still cannot believe that people fall for this shell game.
You NEVER come out ahead on re-selling a car. Forget that noise from the Lexus salespeople or Toyota salespeople about "resale value". If you use up a vehicle like I do....it never matters.
Car dealers hate people like me.
