First off all I just want to thank all of you fellow Dodge owners for the valuable information. I also had my ABS and brake light come on. I went to the local Dodge dealer and purchased a rear speed sensor for 37.10 (jax florida) and located the old one (back axle on top of the differencial)
Had the whole job done in about 30 minutes. A word of advice though, when you call your local Dodge dealer for a price...be sure to get a quote and a name, I was going to pick mine up about 3 hour after I called and the price went up to 80.00. spoke to the mgr. got mine for 37.10

Hey every one I just wanted to say thank for all the advice and I went ahead and fixed it myself only took about 30 min like every one said. saved me a lot of money and also time. So thanks again everyone.

Went ahead and was able to buy a replacement sensor at the local dodge dealer...turns out after I get it replaced, and fired back up (i did have the battery fully disconnected for 30 minutes), my two lights STILL come on. And even when they are not on, I don't have cruise control. WHAT THE HECK!??!! Help me!!

I have the same problem with my cruise control! I thought it wasn't working because I installed a throttle body spacer, and the cruise control cable is in an elevated position. It didn't affect the throttle though, and the throttle cable runs right beside the cruise control cable. I still figured though that that was my problem. I'm glad you posted your message because now I'll bet it isn't the cable. Now I just have to find a way to convince the dealership it isn't...
They replaced the speed sensor and after a few weeks my dash lights came on again.

I can't thank all of you enough for this info. let me give you how it went with me maybe to help some one else. About two years ago the break and abs lights came on. To me no big deal I've had many vehicles with out abs, and a friend with the same truck told me it was the rear sensor but I never changed it. About a year ago the speedometer would not read unless going over 30 mph. Darn I thought either the speedometer head is going out or the computer, again oh well I don't travel on any roads under 30 anyway. Then about 3 months ago the speedometer started not to read unless going over 40. Oh hell I need to know when I'm doing 35 and I noticed that now also the cruse won't set under 40 either and if I managed to set it right at 40 as soon as I started up a hill and dropped below 40 the cruse went crazy! I never put the break/abs problem with the speedometer problem because they happened such a time apart. I had pulled the speedometer head and checked all kind of wiring but no luck. Last night I found this forum and this morning I went to a dodge dealer and got the rear speed sensor. Disconnected the battery then changed the sensor then put the battery back on now everything is fixed. I am so happy thanks.

Thanks everyone! I also had the three signs: ABS light on, Brake light on and no speedo under 25 MPH. Went to several auto parts web sites and seems that the rear sensor is a dealer only item (but a Ford sensor on ebay looks the same!)Bought Dodge #5014787AA(Rear wheel speed sensor) with new wiring harness adapter ($31.75) and cured the problem. Don't be fooled by auto parts claim to have the sensor - the one they have is threaded without the 90 deg. bend and I believe it goes in the transmission. Thanks again, Tom

Hello, I have a 1999 automatic 5.2L dodge dakota slt, and my abs and brake lights are on, also my speedometer does not work at all, i was wondering what i can do to fix it myself, rather than having to go to the local dealership and being charged an arm and a leg to fix it. any help would be much appreciated

I am having a similar problem with my 97 Dodge Dakota. My ABS & Brake light are coming on every now and then. My speedometer does work and have never had a problem with it, but occasionally when I would hit the brakes it felt like the ABS would activate. The dealer picked up a code for a bad front wheel speed sensor. I bought a new and replaced it. A few days later the brake light and ABS light came on again. I took it to the dealer and they traced it back to a bad ABS module. I had it replaced, at a heafty cost. Several weeks later the ABS and brake light came on again. I took it back to the dealer and still it was showing a code for a bad front wheel speed sensor. They replaced the speed sensor again. Several days later the abs and brake light came on again. I haven't had the ABS activate since the module was changed. I feel like I'm getting the run around from the dealer. Does anybody have any advice?

I want to thank you all for your input. I have a 99 SLT Durango. While driving, I totally lost my speedometer and trip odometer, and noticed that the e-brake and ABS lights were on. As well, the power door locks did not lock at 15mph like normal. In looking at the electrical schematics, I suspected the speed sensor, but the book doesn't say that there are more than one, nor does it suggest how to troubleshoot them. I noticed that most of the postings here said that they had a problem with the diff. sensor as opposed to the tranny sensor. I figured that I would replace the diff. sensor first because at $36 (local dealer)and $20 for the tranny sensor, it was less expensive to do it that way than to have them hook it up to the machine ($70 before parts) to tell me which was bad. Prior to doing so, I disconnected the negative lead and left it for the time that it took to replace the sensor. Reconnecting it cleared all fault indications (no brake, abs, or check engine light). Ops check good.

I went back and put an ohmeter on the defective sensor (after replacing it) and it read open. To check them, you simply hold your meter leads to the electrical prongs on the sensor. I don't know what they should read (I didn't think to check prior to replacement), but the bad one read o.l.

Does anyone know how to get this darn sensor out of the diff? Do you just pull it out once you remove the bolt and guard?
I have a 2000 2wd 5 speed

Just pull it out. It will be tight because of the o-ring that keeps it from leaking. You may need to use a standard screwdriver to pry up on the tab that the mounting bolt goes through. Gentle is a good idea here. Good luck.

My check engine light is on also. I am taking the vehicle to a local mechanic. Does replacing the speed sensor make the ABS, Brake, and Check Engine light go off. The mechanic seems to think he has to scan it to clear the lights being on.

Not a Dakota but my 1999 Durango had the same, brake & ABS light on, no speedo until about 45 mph. Searched Yahoo and found this thread. A trip to the dealer for parts, $41 tt&l and about 10 minutes under the SUV, problem solved.

Hey guys. I am back to tell you about the other sensor. You probably saw my message on 14Oct03. Anyway, I had another check engine light. On the way to AutoZone (who will pull the code for free as opposed to $72 for the dealer) I noticed that the truck wasn't shifting as it should. If I was light on the gas, it would shift around 3k rpms. If I was really on it, it would just about red-line WITH THE OD ON. Speedometer worked just fine. Pulling the code confirmed the tranny sensor ($19 at dealer). To change it (on 99 Durango), I used a 1" socket. It is located on the left hand side toward the rear of the tranny. Be prepared with the new sensor as when you remove the old one, tranny fluid will dump out. I don't know if somehow the first sensor knocked this one out. I find it funny that they both went out within a month. Well, I hope this helps someone. Good luck.
