Message: Exactly same symptoms. Did not like the motor turning off and loosing power steering at idle.
Todays cost was $47.58. Inflation taking hold.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to post.
Looks like this problem is going to be around for more years to come.

Message: I would change the oil, would not hurt, the ? is why at that speed? If not the metal filings then put in a new sensor or plug in a reader and find out what the alarm code is. let me know what it is when you find out. good luck

Message: The sensor works by picking up the revolutions in the differrential if metal is in the oil or on the sensor it may get a false reading prompting the computer to turn on those lights signaling a problem.try changing the oil, clean the sensor and diff completely check for any other dammage in the diff, reset comp and post me a reply. Good luck!

Message: So i took off the cover to the differential, and while i was cleaning off the old gasket, i noticed a bunch of metal stuck to the magnet at the bottom of the diff. there was one piece that was about one inch by one inch (ouch) and it had a crescent groove through it which made me think it might be a large ring. if that was a slip ring or something in there it could throw off the symmetry and trip the sensor. New rear end?

Message: Ouch not good, try to find where the peice belongs, a new or used diff may be needed further inspection is required. Check all the teeth. i would pull the axils and remove the differrencial.I think they can be rebuilt.

Message: on the rear differential on top, you should remove and clean it, replace and there is a good chance it just has some metal filings onit throwing the readings off, read back some of the other posts. let me know how you did. usualy easy to do.

Message: I have a 99 dakota 2wd 3.9L automatic. The abs and brake lights came on and the spedometer went loopy. guy at autozone said it might be a speed sensor. I called aamco they wanted $225 to fix if thats the problem they said. so i googled speed sensor and this page came up. so i said what the hell, went down to dodge dealer picked up the rear sensor and did it myself. took me 30 minutes. 1/2 socket for first nut 14mm deep socket for second nut. twist the old sensor 1/4 turn to the left and pry out. On mine the bottom cap on the old sensor busted off inside. after 10mins fishing for it with a small screwdriver and needlenose the damn thing came out. new sensor popped in, tightend it back down, re-connected the wire and took my old lady out to dinner on the $175 bucks i saved. Thanks guys!!! Oh yeah the part was $43 and some change

Message: The internet is so wonderful. I had the same problem: my ABS and Brake lights would come on at 70 mph, and stay on until I shut off the truck (99 Ram 1500 4x4 5.9L). I checked on here and followed the instructions to replace the rear wheel speed sensor (Part #56028187AE)at the top of the rear differential. It was $57 here in Canada.
The instructions by "nrider" were bang on. It only took me 15 minutes because I knew exactly which sockets to use. I jacked up the truck and the put the frame on jackstands. That left plenty of room to get in there (crawling in from the front of the rear drivers side tire gave the best access). The first nut (13mm) holds down a brake line bracket. Came off easily. Moved the bracket over. The second nut came off easily as well (9/16 deep socket needed because the second nut is at the base of the bolt that the first nut was attached to). The sensor is only held in by a small o-ring seal. I just wiggled it back and forth by hand and it slid out. Popped the new one in, bolted everything back down, unhooked the battery to reset the ECM and disco - problem solved.
