Hi, does anyone know if it's possible or worth trying to install an amplifier to the factory RB1 head unit made by Alpine? I have an old but unused H/K CA260 amplifier, and would like to install it in my 2004 C.C. I have added some Infinity 6022i speakers in all four locations, but it still does not sound good enough. I like the look of the factory head unit and since it already has satellite radio and navigation, I was hoping I could keep it. I've been reading that alot of people are getting noise when installing an amp to factory head units. I have seen the new signal processors (expensive) and would be willing to use one if it's worth it. Anyone think I can, or should do it? I love the clean sound of the H/K amps, but i don't want to feed it a crappy signal.

I remember those HK amps..They were very clean and had really good power. If you use a good line-output convertor and quality RCA cables you should have no noise or other problems adding the amp into the system. Use one that is adjustable so you can match the outputs from the radio to the inputs to the amplifier. I have been out of the car audio business for a long time now so I don't know if the 2004 Dakota has a factory-installed amplifier. If you get the input signal for the convertor from the output of the radio it should not matter anyway. Maybe someone here knows more about the 2004 audio system. I bet that would sound pretty good though, a CA260 on 4 Infinity's.

Yeah, those amps are pretty good. There is no factory amplifier, just the power from the head unit. The head unit specs are rated as 66 watts max at 3% distortion. Thats right 3%. I don't have the info on the freq. response of the factory radio, but the H/K is 10 to 100,000 hz. Which makes it sound so clean. I'm just concerened that I would only be feeding the H/K the factory freq. response by using the radios speaker wires for outputs. A new H.U. with satellite and navigation would be about $1500, and that would be more than I can afford since I already have one with those features.
