Subject: radio quit working IP: Logged
Message: the radio in my 95 dakota quit working about a week ago, it doesn't have lights, clock or anything. So, I pulled the unit out and tested the wires and as far as I can tell they all tested fine. the + and - wires from each speaker tested good for continuity. the power wires: the constant wire and a chassis ground wire read about 12v, and when the key is on the power wire and a chassis ground read 12v.
everything looked good so I figured the radio had gone bad. I went the walmart and picked up a JVC cd player for $90 and all the harnesses and dash kit. I matched up the wires on the harnesses and soldered them together (red to red, white to white, etc.) plugged everything in attached the ground wire to the existing chassis ground wire and installed the cd player. I made a whirring noise right when I plugged in the wires but nothing after that even when I started the truck. Same problem as before no lights, no sound, no nothing.
Any idea what might be causing this? I really don't want to take it to a shop to get figured out.
Thanks,
Stephen

Message: Sounds like there's something wrong with the factory amp. It has the Infinity sound system, right?

Message: You should have 2 +12 wires running to it.. i think one is red and one is yellow. One of them should have constant power for station memory and such and one should be switched to turn the unit on... sounds like the switched power wire is not working. you WILL hear something from the cd player when you connect the harness for the first time due to the constant wire providing power to the unit. Think of it like an amp.... you have one main power wire and you have one "turn-on" wire....

Message: I don't have the infinity sound system. I'll check again tomorrow but if I remember right either the red or yellow, I can't remember which one, only tested 12v after I turned the key to the accessory position.
I still think it has something to do with the wire connected to the ignition. That or the whole system is being grounded out somewhere.
I'll check all these possibilities in the morning.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks guys,
Stephen

that's the red wire...the unit only turns on when this gets power..what are you using as the ground? the big ground strap or something in the factory harness? ...if you've tested wires in the factory plug and used the one that shows 'ground', that's actually the dimmer.
