Message: Looks pretty smooth. I myself am getting ready to build one as well. However, I will say that I may just wait to get a Thunderform, because I have an '02 Dak, and the 97 to 01's don't fit the '02's, and by the time I can make a custom box, the new Thunderforms may be out. But if they aren't I will make a box.

Message: fourgivn1, who said the thunderforms don't fit in the 02? I called MTX and they said it would fit, and the one under my back seat fits in my 02 cc. Just had to get longer screws for the back two holes.

I am going to build a box in month or two (need knee surgry first) and am interested in doing something similar to what you built. I have never worked with fiberglass (always a first time of course) and was wondering:
1) How hard is fiberglass to work with
2) What is the best way to use fiberglass to get a mold of the bottem of the truck
thx

Message: Looks SWEET man! I want to do the same thing but but put my amp in between the subs. How long is your box? I noticed your box is squared on the sides (not shaped like the cup holders were). When your box is installed, what does the space where the cup holders were look like now? Is it metal or carpeted? Thanks, dodgeee-O.

Fiberglass isn't that terribly difficult to work with but it does take some practice. I am by far not an expert but it was deffinitly easier to work with by the last coat then the first, and I could deffinitly tell a big difference in the quality of what I was doing. To make the mold I Laid plastic and aluminum foil over the pan of the truck and laid the first coats of fiberglass on that.

The box is about 50-52 inchs across. ( I am at work so I don't know for sure) There would be plenty of room to mount the jack or an amp between the speakers. On the edges I am going to cut 1/4" plywood amd carpet it to match to fill in the gaps between the truck and the box.
If anybody wants a better description of exactly how I did it e-mail me and I will be glad to try to help you.

Message: Urhistory, I say they don't fit SOME of the Daks. (I should have posted that.) Depending upon where your Dakota is manufactured, the brackets that attach to the bottom of the passenger side fold-up seat in the back don't line up with the grooves in the Thunderform. I know this from experience, because I had one installed and then found that it did not fit.
MTX themselves verified this for me. So you're partially right, and I was partially wrong....the fit SOME of the Daks, and fortunately you're one of the lucky guys whose Thunderform happens to fit. Unfortunately, I am not. I think the screw length also has to do with where your truck is made, because although the grooves/brackets didn't line up, the Thunderform fit like a glove otherwise.
FYI (for everyone)....the Thunderform specifically made for the 2002 model will be coming out in about 4 months.

Message: Looks great..in fact that is exactly what I have been envisioning for my truck(can't sleep, designing a system is driving me nuts).
How does it sound? what amps are you using and where are you mounting them?

Message: Yep, I'm sure I could. BUT I do not know what it would take, and doing so would either require me to a) spend money to have it done, or b) spend money on the tools to have it done....and I've already found a cheaper solution, so I am good to go.

Message: I have a kicker 1252xi and a pioneer gmx624 That I am going to run to diamond audio components in my doors as soon as I get a chance to put them in. I am planning on putting the amps under the seats for now, But I am going to upgrade both amps when I get the money. Hopefully I will have good weather this weekend and I can get the amps and door speakers in. when I do I will tell you how they sound.

Message: Why don't any of you skilled craftsmen on this board offer to build(for sale of course) custom boxes for are Daks. I know there is the tunderform but it has it's drawbacks like my biggest issue, no where to mount your amp(if it's too big for the front seats)
just a thought

Message: I have a 2000 Durango in which I installed 165k's in the front doors. After looking at your pics, I was wondering what that square piece of foam etc. around the speakers was and what its for. Could you tell me any other mods you made to the doors also. Do you also have any suggestions for sealing up the door, for better excursion control and power handling? With the window coming down just behind the speakers, it makes it hard "enclose" them.
Thanks and keep up the good work,
Nate

Message: The foam is the edge of the speaker baffle that surrounds the woofer. It keeps water and dirt out of the speaker and helps it by acting like an enclosure. They are made out of foam so they compress to go around the tracks for the window. They sell them at crutchfield for like $10.00 a pair. (good investment)
