Subject: What could I get for under $500? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, so I have about $500 dollars to spend, and I'm looking to get a system for my club cab Dakota. The problem is that I have no idea about this kind of stuff. So, is it possible to get quality stuff with that much money? I would like to get a stealthbox to fit under the bench in the back, and maybe two subs down there. If I can't get everything, can anyone suggest what to start out with? Oh, and where is a good place to get a stealthbox from? Thanks alot

Message: if always a good idea to start out with a good head unit, and then work your way up from there. $500 is a good start, especially if you'll consider slightly used equipment. i have a couple of items that might be of use to you.

Message: Hmm...about 5 grand more and you can have my setup in my 2001 cc dakota...lol...but yes start with the deck if you want a good Eclipse8443 i have one its the ones that if there stolen they are disabled and traced electronicly. If the powers cut they won't work unless you have the key.

Message: Ok, money aside, what should I go for with my setup? I'm thinking about either the JL stealthbox or the MTX Thunderform. First off, which one of these are better? I'd say I'm leaning towards the Thunderform, becuase it has space for two 10s. Also, how much do each of these cost? Thanks

Message: I think $500 can get a long way into building a system if you get the stuff online or from Ebay. I bought a Pioneer DEH-P77DH deck and P608 CD changer from etronics.com along with a RF 301S sub amp, Orion 50x4 mid/tweet amp and 2 pr Infinity 605CS components off Ebay for right at $600. Throw in 2 RF 10" subs I had and another $100 for wires, wood and other supplies and everything was about $700 ($800-900 if you add in cost of the subs). The system is clear and loud enough to drown out all the road noise on the freeway, but it won't drop the neighbors dog from 100 yards ;)
$250-300 for a Thunderform is going to eat up a major portion of your budget. You could probably get a used TF for $150. Buying used isn't bad, I would definately buy a slightly used high quality piece of equipment rather than a brand new low quality unit.
If you do all the work yourself your going to save a ton of money. I built fiberglass bottom sub encolsures for my 00 CC, total cost was about $50, one heck of alot cheaper than a TF.

Message: Well I would build it myself, but I would have no idea where to start. I don't know much about car audio, barely anything at all, actually. So I'm not sure what I can do by myself, I'd hate to mess something up.

Message: Give yourself some credit, we all knew nothing about car stereo's until we started messing with them, your just at the beginning of the curve. One advantage you have is all the information readily available on the internet for installing car stereo's. Check out car audio forums or manufacturers websites, they have a wealth of information. If you spend some time and get comfortable with what your going to install you won't have to worry about "messing" something up. Plus you'll have saved yourself some cash and will have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself.
If you don't have much experience I would recommend buying your stereo equipment from a good stereo shop that treats you well (not Best Buy Circuit City, etc). They will be quite helpful answering questions during the install, it's worth the extra money. When I started playing with car stereo's years ago I always found good information at speaker shops or car stereo shops, but never at the big box stores.

Message: Looking at your budget, the most cost effective way of getting a system would be ebay. Personally I like the Legacy brand on ebay, you can get 1000-2400w amps for less then $150 and they are brand new from the factory. Subs are a steal as well and they put out the power too. I am thinking of going that route when I'm ready after cosmetically upgrading my truck.

Message: lol...more like 100-240...i had an amp a long time ago that was 1600 watts max and i think it was like only 500 true watts...MAYBE. You wont get 2400 true watts for much less than $1500 but thats for a really good one like orions 25000d and its $1700 at stores but i found it for $800-900 online. I have a memphis 1500d thats nothing less than 1500 true watts at its best that ran me $300 but it was used from a buddie and he gave like $1100 new but bought it from a stereo shop and it was installed by them...great amp and i got a heck of a deal on it for 1500 watts mono. IMO save your money and get a good well known amp.

Message: HAHAHA.
I forgot to say they were in order.
I would buy a pair of front speakers for $100,
Deck for about $170+, and some speakers for the back~$100. That'll be a little less than $400. Save the $100 until you have enough for an amp and then subs.

Message: Rick, Stay away from Alec's WalMart system and buy some good quality items.
Budget at least $200 minimum for a good radio (Alpine, Eclipse, and so on), I'd budget $300 minimum for good front & back speakers (Alpine, Boston Acoustics, Kenwood and so on). You will have just built a great sounding start right there. If you want more power and subs then you can expand the above to include the additional components.
Currently sporting:
Eclipse CD5423 - $289.00 at Sound Advice
Boston Acoustics - NX67 (Front & back, $149.00 a pair at my local audio shop)
I have right at $624.00 including tax.
My setup sounds great, I am not setup to vibrate down the road like a lot of these guys are but my stuff is crystal clear and awesome sounding.

Message: I just placed an order for the following (new to car-audio setup):
Alpine CDM-9821 [$117 online, $139 retail]
(4x) PPI PC650C 6.5" coaxials [$105/pair online, $160/pr retail]
I also got the mounting kit and wire harness online for around $5 each. I'm still waiting for the whole shipment to arrive, but I'm looking forward to it. I listened to the setup at a local stereo shop and the PPI's blew away some Alpines that were priced @ i think $180/pr.
I'm going to install the head unit myself, but I'm letting a stereo shop do the speakers, b/c i dont trust myself to pull the panels and not mess them up. (tips on removing a 99cc dash would be great if you could email me!, sorry for the hijack)
Just some suggestions for the new ppl like me.

Message: Sorry, bad wording above. I wasn't going for online pricing, I was basically touching on Retail "in the store buying" of good audio components. I did some shopping around prior to buying and it seemed like all the good head units averaged $200 and up with the better recommended speakers being in the mid $100's and up.
I know you can get pretty good sound from inexpensive audio equipment also, some of you older guys out there might remember the old Kmart bought "RoadMaster" audio packages (radio, equalizer, speakers, & wiring for like $70) but that was back in the 1980's. I thought I had the best sounding system in the neighborhood back then.
