Hello again...
After more research and good reviews for this CD receiver unit, I think I'm going to be going ahead with the Alpine CDA-D853, which is the 1.5 DIN size which will fit the Dakota. I'm also going to purchase the Alpine 1729 speakers, though I don't think I will buy 4 of those at once, since they are a bit pricey. I'll buy two for the front and just use the fronts until I can purchase the backs.
My question is, to avoid running new speaker wires, of course, I'd like to use the existing wires and harness. What do I need to purchase to make all of this fit, and from where?

The place you buy your speakers and receiver from should sell wiring harnesses for both.
I replaced just the front set of speakers. I made the mistake of getting 6.5" instead of teh 6.5"S which are slightly bigger to match the factory speakers. This made installation a little more difficult.
I have a club cab, and replacing the front speakers only worked great. Instead of changing the back speakers which meant taking out ALL of the paneling in the back, I took out the lid for the tookbox behind the driver, replaced it with a carpeted piece of plywood, and cut a couple of holes for some 6x9's that I had from a previous vehicle. They add a little extra kick when no one is sittind in the back (the seat still folds down with no loss of space).
Another trick I did was put a pair of tweeters in the vents on either side of the driver. They sound great too! I am a big fan of having the loud stereo that no one can see by looking in the cab.

Interesting idea about getting 6x9 speakers in, as I have always been a big fan of these size speakers. In a previous vehicle, I had Alpine 6x9s and loved them! But I wasn't exactly a brilliant designer about it. I simply made some wood boxes, cut out the hole and stuffed them in the back seat of my Buick Regal. At the time, no wife or stepson, so I didn't need the seat :-)
Thanks for the tip onthe 6x9s. It's worth considering.

Other than the thunderform, the best upgrade I made to my system was adding comp speakers in the front. If you listen to what true audiophiles say about good sound quality, the rear speakers are only there for "fill"...It is the front speakers u should really focus on...and the componant speakers really made a difference

What you need to be aware of is the "SAF".
This is the "Spose Acceptance Factor".
IE. The smaller, cheaper, and less protrusive the system, the more likely she(he) will let you do what you want... heh.
